Coker and Brother, in Darlington County, S.C., including receipts, ledgers, business correspondence, and freight lists; including receipt book, 1833-1874, Society Hill, S.C., kept by Caleb Coker, including entries for Coker and Gregg, 1833-1836; C. Coker and Brother, 1837-1874; and receipts of Coker as treasurer of the Society Hill School Committee. Account book, 1835-1865, listing store accounts, cotton purchased, freight for shipping on the Pee Dee River, corn and cloth bought and distributed to soldiers' families, and tax in kind for soldiers' families; day book, 1838-1843, listing accounts for collection, shipping invoices for cotton, cotton purchases, and boat accounts; freight lists, 1849-1851, re shipping items, including candles, bagging, rice, salt, medicine, and flour, aboard steamships down the Pee Dee River. Letter, 7 May 1851, Darlington, S.C., William Law, to C. Coker and Brother, re shipping of Law's cotton; letters, 13 and 16 Sept. 1852, Charleston, S.C., Douglas Nisbet to C. Coker and Brother, re competition over hiring steamship pilots and mistakes in freight lists made by Nisbet's new clerk; also including 20 volumes, 1832-1895, consisting of 5 cash books, 1832-1895; 8 ledgers, 1836-1880; day book, June-Oct. 1852; and 7 indexes to ledgers, 1871-1877 and undated. Account book, Nov. 1861-Feb. 1867, was later used as a child's scrapbook, and includes pencil drawings, postcards of non-South Carolina sites, and clippings, ca. 1910s-1920s, of images and advertising from newspapers and such magazines as the Saturday Evening Post.
